dyed paper

Text hasn’t been a driving force in my prints, although it does play a role from time to time. But it is great to work with! For this print I started with eucalyptus dyed paper. The leaves are form a tree that split and had to be cut down in my front yard, but it continues to send out young shoots in an attempt to regrow. The young leaves are great for dye as they are juicey and full of young sap. Whenever I dye paper I tie a bundle together with silk which gives me some beautiful dyed lengths to work with.

first print layer

The first print layer is a vinyl cut. I haven’t used vinyl to cut before so it was a bit of an adventure getting the pressure right with less resistant material. The flowers are the Tasmanian Native Laurel which have are lovely dense bunches of flowers resting on deep green foliage. I did a gradient roll for this layer.

final layer

The final layer is the text. Well actually it is the letter ‘l’ repeated in a number of fonts and sizes and also cut into a vinyl block. The roll is a translucent black which plays on the petals as well as background of the print. The initial dying of the paper added some tonal variations to the petals as well.

Apart from the occasional escape to the studio to print it is a busy time painting walls and sorting out the house ready for the summer visitors.

I love the greens, and the depth it’s almost 3D. Such a beautiful print. Your new studio must be working for you to be creating such peaceful, lush work.
