Teaching lithography

grainer at work

Yesterday was my last day of teaching lithography at Tafe Tasmania for the year. It was a really fabulous time for me – testing out the teaching shoes! I had not done a lot of plate lithography, and the facilities at Tafe were very good with a grainer (picture above shows the grainer at work) in a separate room and very well set up.

bruce hartney

Bruce Hartney (lithograph above) preferred to work on stone and produced a number of superb lithographs that really made use of the mediums range of effects with washes and drawing.

maryanne ratcliff

Maryanne Ratcliffe worked on zinc plates to create this triptych of giraffes which are full of warmth and personality. Hand colouring the leaves with watercolour really brought them to life.

dana lang

Dana Lang worked on plates for whole term and developed images in response to the traditional Chinese painters. The lithograph above is printed in white on black paper, giving a beautiful subtle glow of life to the flowers.

gabrielle teakle

Gabrielle Teakle worked on the lithograph stones mostly and produced images that talk about the women in her family and the significant events that shaped their lives. The beautiful flowing dresses of the wedding days responded well to the gentle marksĀ  and subtle tone, contrasting with the dark washes in the background.

There are more, but I think you can see what a fabulous group of artists they all are! It was really wonderful to be a part of this group as they all experimented and developed a feel for lithography, which is so often overlooked as a medium to work in, but seeing the huge range of work that can be achieved through 8 students makes me fall in love with it all over again!
