Paul Zika is having a solo exhibition at the Stephen McLaughlan Gallery in Swanston Street, Melbourne. Running from the 3rd to the 20th it is an exhibition of work that continues a path of research for Paul, working with traditional patterns in a contemporary way.

On show at the Long Gallery in Salamanca Arts Centre at the moment is a selection of indigenous artwork collected over a period of time. This private collection is well worth having a look at if your in the area, offering quite a wide representation of work in a number of methods. I can’t find any details about the show on the SAC website yet, but it will probably go up soon! I think it is called Big River…

Hi Lindon,
how are you?
It is my undrstanding that the “Big River” exhibition is one of the “art investment groups” this particular one with a focus on indigenous art. It is a group of people who invest a set amount for ten years say $2000 per year each, then at the end hold a “auction” between the investors who are given ‘credits” to bid with, my understanding that the auction is this Sunday (but it will be a private function). As the exhibition that ran the previous week – the “Derwent group” is an initiative from Dick Bett of Bett gallery, and there are several of these groups i.e. the “Esk group” and so on…quite a good idea, each group has a different “focus”

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for all the info – Fiona had filled me in on the deatils of the show, but relying on memory alone for posting is a good way to throw myself into quick sand! We thought it was a great idea too – there are so many fabulous emerging artists that it would be a small investment for a group of people to purchase some works to share and enjoy and eventually sell by auction between the group.
