The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne was home for the weekend to Art Melbourne, an annual event for galleries to present a few works to the  public in a central location. Completed in 1880 this stately building overlooks the Carlton Gardens and the city centre.  It was a sure sign for the young city of Melbourne that the future was secure and bright and full of international interest with over a million people visiting the opening exhibition that inspired the development of a mechanised culture.

But on to Art Melbourne, the cultural event of today! There was a healthy crowd of people weaving in and out of the dozens of partitioned gallery stalls adn absorbing the huge range of artwork on show, and for sale. Ballan and Pannan had a few of my works on show and their display was really well presented.

They had a little section for the contemporary work, my prints on the left sitting beside Gilly Jedwab’s paintings. Currently their primary interest is with Aboriginal art, and they have a superb range of work.

There was a couple of Tasmanian galleries in the show – the Tapir Print Studio which is a fairly new studio on the Hobart scene. Printmakers Nic and Madeleine Goodwolf have moved from the town of Cygnet to South Hobart to expand their interests. Colville Street Art Gallery also had a stall, but I didn’t actually get to that one! It is certainly one of the problems of such a large art fair – finding everything you want to find.
