Godwin Bradbeer and Todd Hunter

This seems to be at odds really, to put both these artists into one post, but here goes!

While I was visiting the Ballan and Pannan Gallery in High street, I had a bit of time to wander the street and see a couple of exhibitions. Godwin Bradbeer was right across the road at the James Makin Gallery and it was one of the most breathtaking shows I’ve had the pleasure of visiting! Sticking to traditional and time honoured methods of drawing, he has created large scale works that capture sentiments of human nature superbly. pastel, chinagraph and silver oxide are used with deft skill and enticing moments of sweet discovery as you explore the surface of the drawing. You can view his body of work online as well.

The James Makin Gallery is located at 716 High Street, Armadale and the show continues until May 10.

Further down the street I came across the Scott Livesey Gallery. It’s rusty door with uninspired graffiti set in a dull grey building concealed the lively work of Todd Hunter apart from the glimpse through the narrow doorway. It was impossible to walk by!

The more I looked at Todd’s work, the more I was drawn into the deep layers beautifully controlled and directed to form superb paintings of colour and light and movement. It really was a treat for the eyes. He also had some very smal works on paper - the working models for his large scale paintings, that were also beautiful but with a delicate gentle nature rather than the very powerful oil paintings.

This exhibition finishes on May 10 as well, and the Scott Livesey Gallery is located at 909A High Street, Armadale, Melbourne. The website also has the exhibition online.
