The Art of Practice

six of my practice pieces

Being dedicated to practice is something that seems to wax and wane. Perhaps because there is so much time and energy going into a specific project, but keeping up the experiments and honing the skills is really about practice. So with that in mind I set the task of producing something each day, which of course I never quite succeed at, but it has helped to have a specific project boundary. If I just say to myself, ‘draw or paint something everyday’, then I seem to wobble a bit and produce now and then. The boundary I have set is in the size of the paper or canvas I am working on. 25cm x 25cm allows me to experiment on small scale work, but also is large enough to look at how something will work on a bigger scale. So this is my devious plan – try to produce a drawing or painting each day on a 25cm x 25cm scale – and it seems to have helped me as creating a unified collection of a specific size has a certain aesthetic appeal despite the images being completely independant of each other! Of course there is a risk of the work falling into some sort of order as well, which is not the aim of experimenting and practicing, but that is just being human.

[...] Again this is not intended to be a collection of wonderful finished works, but purely a way to keep the art of practice happening, so there is no filtering of what appears in the group of six! You can see the last group on an older post. [...]
